Most but the latest ship designs are based on a low poly count in the classic client. Compare ships like the Apocalypse with the Abaddon. You can really see that the Apocalypse was kept as close to the low poly original as possible, where as the Abaddon had not to obey such arbitrary design rules. Thus you get really odd and bad locking base shapes and structures for most of the ships that are from that era and had probably been designed first.
If anything was to wish for, then that CCP does do the next gernation of models the same as they did with the Scorpion.. out with the old restrictions and in with some new fresh air.
Remarks on the worst cases:
Frigates: Crucifier (Amarr meets Minmatar), Inquisitor (flying hook 1), Tormentor (flying hook 2), Bantam (is the suction part dropable?), Griffin (lantern fish), Imicus (a side support from keeping it falling over?), Maulus (engine leafs with focal point?), Navitas (proof of submarines in space), Tristan (action figure?), Breacher (structurally fail, no triangles), Burst (ok, who did sit on that?), Probe (lets go s-a-i-ling), Slasher (moskito with loose attached head)
Cruisers: Arbitrator (Star Trek meets Eve), Blackbird (Kestrel got some bulky attachments), Moa (lantern fish 2, can you imagine a deck layout for that thing?), Osprey (scrapyards last bits and pieces found a new home, did the Minmatar help with the design?), Exequeror (3 different engines, really?), Stabber (dragons in space)
Battleships: Apocalypse (most boring looking BS), Armageddon (Alien meets Eve), Raven (the best parts going for it are the wings), Typhoon (piping the size of a big house OUTSIDE on the hull?)
Overall design:
Amarr have the senakiest and cw-value lowest designs. All over fast and sleak looking ships. From below/behind badly or not at all plated, shooting them from behind/below should cause more damage. Some change in plating behaivior/design would seem logical.
Caldari have the most bulky and uninspired designs I've ever seen. Even Star Wars ships have had a nicer look. The first ships that make a change for good in this regard are the Scorpion, the Drake and the Tengu. This race has efficiency and teamwork on their flags, but the older ships look like they were stolen from the Minmatar and assembled from scrapyard left overs.
Gallente have some odd shaped ships in the arsenal. The asymmetry of some of the desings is questionable for a soceiety that's so much about equality, freedom and balance.
Minmatar have more symmetric designs than the Gallente or Caldari.. although according to background story they are the guys who have to improvise the most!!! Also some of their designs are more fitting to the Caldari and vice versa.
